Pro-slots group For Maryland For Our Future is attacking Comptroller Peter Franchot's (D-Takoma Park) position on slots in a new web ad, criticizing his past support for legalized slot machines.

"Question 2, this year's slots proposal, provides $660 million dollars to fund education," a narrator says in the ad. "In contrast, the Franchot slots bill gave less money to education than Question 2."

Franchot has been a staunch opponent of November's slots referendum and serves on the steering committee of anti-slots group Marylanders United to Stop Slots.

The voice over in the ad claims Franchot's past slots legislation gave a greater percentage of money to slots parlors than education. "That's right, Peter Franchot gave a greater percentage of money to the gambling industry than Question 2," says the narrator. Proponents argue the primary purpose of the referendum is to provide funding for education and to close the state's budget deficit.

But Scott Arceneaux, the Senior Director of Marylanders United to Stop Slots, says the ad is bending truth and is turning an issue campaign into a personal one.

"A sad departure from the actual issue of slots in Maryland coupled with blatant untrue personal attacks which have no place in this issue campaign," Arceneaux wrote in an email to PolitickerMD.com.

But For Maryland For Our Future claims Franchot has been the one waging personal attacks in the campaign, and points to comments made by Charles E. Graham, chair of Marylanders United to Stop Slots, as evidence.

"I was under the impression we were going to talk about the issues," Graham told Maryland Moment of Franchot earlier this week. "But the problem is it's become personal, and the attacks on the governor, I don't want to be a part of that. ... It's not what I signed up for."

Meanwhile, Marylanders United to Stop Slots launched an ad in the Washington, D.C. suburbs on Friday, just days before voters make their choice on the controversial referendum. The ad is a revised version of one already airing in Baltimore.
