Voters give nod to slots, Franchot pledges to continue fight

Ballot Question 2, the controversial slots referendum, passed by huge margins on Tuesday.

The controversial measure passed 59 to 41 percent, according to The Baltimore Sun

But Comptroller Peter Franchot (D-Takoma Park), who was a staunch opponent to Question 2, said he will continue the fight against "lobbyists and the tax loopholes that only benefit the special interests."

"I pledge to continue my efforts to help Maryland manage through this difficult economic period," Franchot said in a statement. "And I'll fight to make sure Maryland taxpayers don't get fleeced when this bad slots plan falls flat."

Franchot not only waged a heated and aggressive war against the referendum, but against Gov. Martin O'Malley (D-Baltimore) for his support of the measure. Although the intra-party feud occasionally resulted in trash-talking, Franchot said the campaign against slots was never about any one individual.

"It wasn't about me or the governor, it was about the kind of Maryland we want for your children and grandchildren," Franchot said.

Shaun Adamec, a deputy press secretary to O'Malley, said the governor was pleased with the outcome, but fully realized the challenges ahead.

"The governor looks forward to working with the leaders of the General Assembly and others to ensure a smooth implementation process, and to address the ongoing impact of the national economic downturn," Adamec wrote in an email to PolitickerMD.com.
