Van Hollen does not rule out bid for Senate

U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Kensington) isn't ruling out a bid for Senate in 2010, according to Roll Call. Van Hollen told reporters on Wednesday that if a Senate seat became vacant in Maryland, "it's something I would have to take a look at," but added, "there's no indication there's going to be a vacancy."

Van Hollen currently chairs the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and was appointed to the new position of assistant to the speaker this month to avoid a face-off between Van Hollen and U.S. Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) for the Democratic caucus chair.

A Senate vacancy would be highly unlikely. U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Baltimore) is not up for re-election until 2012 and U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Baltimore) has given no indication that she'll be retiring in 2010, but has yet to make an official announcement about her plans.

"I want to be there to help Barack Obama get elected, I wanna be there for him on inauguration day, I want to be there to vote for his spectacular agenda, I wanna be there for his first term, I wanna be there for his second term," Mikulski said at a fundraiser for her campaign committee in July.
