Edwards receives committee assignments

U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Fort Washington) received her first two committee assignments on Thursday. The House’s newest member will serve on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Science and Technology Committee.

“These are two tremendous committee assignments,” said Edwards in a statement. “I would like to thank my colleagues for the opportunity to serve on these committees. We face serious challenges and I look forward to immediately getting to work on these committees in order to help my district and our country move in a new direction.”

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) expressed confidence in Edwards.

“As a member of both the Transportation and Infrastructure and Science and Technology Committees, Congresswoman Donna Edwards will help lay the foundation for a strong future for our nation,” Speaker Pelosi said in a statement.

She continued: “Her keen intellect and powerful voice as a tireless advocate for her constituents and all Americans will make Congresswoman Edwards a leader in the New Direction Congress’ efforts to expand on an Innovation Agenda that invests in American ingenuity and repairs a crumbling infrastructure that will get our economy moving and create jobs.”

Edwards will be continuing her series of coffee shop discussion on Saturday. She will be speaking at a Starbucks in Upper Marlboro at 9am, and a Caribou Coffee in Rockville at noon.

Edwards, who represents Maryland’s 4th Congressional District, won a seat in congress just weeks ago after defeating Peter James (R-Germantown) in a special election. She will face James again in November.
