Rawlings-Blake under fire: I plan to do more charitable giving than usual

Baltimore City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake (D) said Thursday she would be giving more of her personal salary to charity this year than usual, but didn't go as far as to say she'll be giving the full some of her recent $2,450 pay raise to charity.

Poll: Marylanders have high hopes for Obama

Marylanders have high expectations for President-elect Barack Obama, according to a new poll.
 
According to the survey, paid for and conducted by the Annapolis-based market research firm OpinionWorks, 32 percent of Marylanders think Obama will do a "great" job as president, 34 percent said "good,"  12 percent said "so-so," and 6 percent predicted a "bad job." Seventeen percent were not sure or refused to respond.

Dixon under pressure: 'I decided to donate my cost of living adjustment'

Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon (D) said Thursday she'll donate her controversial pay raise to charity and urged other city officials to do the same.

"After much thought, I decided to donate my cost of living adjustment to a local charity that is helping the less fortunate in Baltimore," Dixon said in a statement.

Edwards: Collapse of auto industry would threaten thousands of Marylanders

U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Fort Washington) said Thursday that if Congress doesn't step in to assist the ailing U.S. auto industry, over 2,000 Maryland workers could face unemployment.

"The collapse of the auto industry would threaten more than 2,400 jobs here in Maryland alone," Edwards said in a statement. "Our faltering economy cannot withstand another devastating blow as we are already in a recession and our unemployment rate is at a 15-year high."

Auto industry bailout: How Maryland's delegation voted

The U.S. House of Congress voted Wednesday night to send $14 billion in emergency loans to Detroit automakers.

The Auto Industry Financing and Restructuring Act passed the House 237 to 170. The Maryland delegation voted 6 to 1 in favor of the bill with outgoing U.S. Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-Kennedyville) abstaining from the vote. The bailout measure is backed by the White House, but Senate Republicans have shown little support for the bill and are suggesting alternate solutions.

State GOP blasts Dems over Baltimore pay increases

The Maryland Republican Party pounced on Baltimore Democrats Wednesday, after The Baltimore Sun reported numerous city officials received pay increases totaling $26,250.

"Once again, this is an example of Maryland Democrat leaders operating under a different set of rules than the rest of us," state GOP Chair Jim Pelura said in a statement.

Baltimore Sun: Baltimore officials criticized over pay increases

Baltimore City officials found themselves under fire Wednesday after The Baltimore Sun reported Mayor Sheila Dixon, City Comptroller Joan Pratt and City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake received pay increases amid city hiring freezes and ongoing budget concerns.

The three Democrats received raises without discussion at the Nov. 26 Board of Estimates meeting, which approves all significant city expenditures.

Montgomery Dems unanimously re-elect officers

The Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee unanimously re-elected its officers on Tuesday.

Chair: Karen Britto

Vice-chair: Alan Banov

Treasurer: Simon Atlas

Secretary: Elliot Chabot

Assistant treasurer: Steve Fischer

Assistant secretary: Marie Wallace

Officers serve two-year terms and are elected by the Central Committee members. Central Committee members are elected by voters every four years. The entire Central Committee is up for re-election in 2010.
