Doug Smith on Playing On Public Fears About Council-Manager Proposal; CP Adds to The Debate

Ward One resident Doug Smith is co-chairman, Annapolitans for a Better Community, sponsors of the Petition for Council-Manager structure which has played such a big role in this election. My comments follow at the end:

I am always interested in the various "negatives" that are thrown up by the opponents to having a City Manager report to the Council. Here’s an example: Opponents try to create

Update From Annapolitans for A Better Community on Council-Manager Proposal

The following was provided by Bill Kardash and Doug Smith:

Dear Friends of ABC,

During the past week, you may have seen news accounts of our endorsement of Alderman Dave Cordle’s Mayoral Campaign. We thought you would like to know why we have endorsed Dave and the steps that lead to it:

During the past year, we have tried to meet with all candidates for mayor and the city

City Manager Petition--The Race To The Finish!!!

IF YOU HAVE NOT SIGNED THE PETITION YET--W.T.H. ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Don't Believe the ULSOS (I'll explain that one later) Propaganda Put out By Moyer Inc and Their Hired Muscle....we need a city manager form of government!

From Annapolitans for A Better Community:

Dear Friends,

For the past few months, our petition drive for a City Manager has been gaining steam: first, volunteers signed up friends and neighbors to launch the effort (THANKS to all of you who have helped!) Then, we went into high-gear with an intense direct mail program that enabled us to reach registered voters throughout the City. And recently, we followed up the initial direct mail effort with another round to remind those who had not yet signed the petition.

City Manager Petition: "The single-most effective action we -- as voters and tax-payers -- can take to improve the operations of City government"

I urge all readers to sign the petition to bring this to referendum. Please read the below letter from civic activists Bill Kardash and Doug Smith:

In the past two months, the Petition Drive to bring a City Manager to Annapolis has really gone into high-gear. Beginning in early June, we expanded our efforts from door-to-door collection to a wider approach using direct mail to reach each registered voter. The results from the direct mail campaign have been very encouraging as volunteers were no longer constrained by “knocking on doors” and we could reach more households faster and more efficiently.

The Weird and Wacky World of Weikel and Purcell....S'il Vous Plait

I think it is time to amend the Wacky World of Weikel by now calling it The Weird and Wacky World of Weikel and Purcell. Most of their emails go back and forth between the two and are generated by one or the other. I have also decided that it is only fair to include the email addresses of those who receive their rants because they are part of the public record too. Perhaps if they are unhappy receiving these emails they can request that Mr. Weikel and Mr. Purcell stop sending them. They go to the mayor, the mayor's boyfriend Dale, The Baltimore Sun, WNAV, Waed One President Doug Smith, and the mayor's press secretary Rhonda Wardlaw.

Mayor Tries to Pull A Fast One for Her Friends at City Council

The below is from civic activist Doug Smith and is based on what occurred at the most recent city council meeting. We thank Doug for his work on behalf of bettering Annapolis. Just when you thought Ellen "O" could not cause any further damage, she tried to pull this one off:

At City Council (July 13 09) Ordinance-40-09 was a wonderful little gem that popped up at the last minute. Introduced by Mayor Moyer, this ordinance would modify city code to grant six months severance to any department director who is removed from office by the Mayor. And the terminated employee gets 6 months pay if fired, with or without cause.

Republican Women in Deep Doo-doo, Bowling and Weikel Weigh In, Democrats Should Consider Weikel in Similar Light

It looks as if Joyce and CHuck Thomann's nasty and irresponsible rhetoric is earning them the reaction it deserves. This made big headlines in the blogosphere and some readers have told me that mega-blogs Huffington Post and Daily Kos picked their stories up from little old me. Huh-wuddya know?

Republican candidate for Ward Three Scott Bowling has taken the high road and distanced himself from this scene. Among other things, he wrote:

In an open letter on the Republican Women of Anne Arundel County Maryland website, Joyce Thomann stated that President “Obama and Hitler have a great deal in common in my view.” I forcefully reject this view enunciated by Ms.

Greg Stiverson on City Manager....and cosmetic surgery?

This just in from Ward Six Aldermanic Candidate Greg Stiverson:

Annapolitans for Better Government (ABC), chaired by Doug Smith and Bill Kardash, has mailed copies of the City Manager petition to every voter in the city. This petition would place on the ballot the question of whether Annapolis should have a Council/City Manager form of government. A bill to effect this failed on a 5 to 4 vote last winter in the City Council. This petition would put the issue before the voters.I strongly support the Council/City Manager form of government. To see my reasons, read my blog entry entitled "Stiverson Clinic for Cosmetic Surgery Opens" on my website.

Ward One President Doug Smith On The City Manager Petition

The City Council approved $8K increase in the Mayor's salary, starting January 2010. A number of people have asked me "Can we afford a City Manager now that we are paying more money to the Mayor? "

This is a great question -- and here is how I see it.

The City needs a City Manager to help use SAVE money. We just saw the citycouncil increase the planned spending for 2009-2010 by $5 Million. The Starting point was a budget of $81 M, but the council has a very difficult time setting priorities - and they have no objective person they can turn to to ask for recommendations on where we might cut back.
