Auto industry bailout: How Maryland's delegation voted

The U.S. House of Congress voted Wednesday night to send $14 billion in emergency loans to Detroit automakers.

The Auto Industry Financing and Restructuring Act passed the House 237 to 170. The Maryland delegation voted 6 to 1 in favor of the bill with outgoing U.S. Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-Kennedyville) abstaining from the vote. The bailout measure is backed by the White House, but Senate Republicans have shown little support for the bill and are suggesting alternate solutions.

Jennings predicts Harris-Kratovil rematch, eyes state Senate

Del. J.B. Jennings (R-Harford County) said Tuesday, that if state Sen. Andy Harris (R-Cockeysville) makes another bid for higher office, then he will immediately throw his name into the ring to replace Harris in the 7th District state Senate seat.

Harris was defeated by U.S. Rep.-elect Frank Kratovil (D-Stevensville) in November in the 1st Congressional District by less than 3,000 votes and has left the door for his 2010 ambitions wide open. Jennings said a rematch between Harris and Kratovil is likely.

Amid speculation, Pelura's future not on the convention agenda

ANNAPOLIS -- Jim Pelura's future as chair of the Maryland Republican Party may still be in jeopardy after at this weekend's state GOP Fall 2008 Convention, but Pelura was not met with any public opposition and the conversation focused on the party's future as a whole.

Speculation continued on Friday that state Sens. Alex Mooney and Andy Harris were looking to oust Pelura, after Harris lost a hard-fought race for the 1st Congressional District seat against Democrat Frank Kratovil by only a few thousand votes. The district was considered a Republican stronghold by most.

Harris leaves 2010 door wide open

ANNAPOLIS -- Republican Andy Harris made clear on Friday that he's leaving his options open for 2010.

"I think there's a reasonable chance I'll be running for something in 2010 that's state level or the federal level. That still remains to be seen," Harris told PolitickerMD.com at the Double Tree Hotel at the state party's Fall 2008 Convention, which lasted Friday evening thorough Saturday afternoon.

Meekins has new gig, says voters will have 'buyer's remorse' with Kratovil

Andy Harris' former campaign manager, Chris Meekins, congratulated incoming U.S. Rep. Frank Kratovil (D-Stevensville) on Thursday, but seemed ready to move on.

"I congratulate Frank Kratovil on his hard-fought victory and I respect the decision of the voters," Meekins wrote in an email to PolitickerMD.com. "I am confident voters in the first district will have buyer's remorse when they see how Frank Kratovil votes in Washington."

Freshman Kratovil continues preparation for Congress with Harvard conference

Frank Kratovil has yet to be sworn in as a freshman Congressman, but he is already heading back to school for some extra credit.

Following his formal new member orientation, the 1st Congressional District's incoming Representative headed to Cambridge, Massachusetts this week to attend a conference on preparation for his new job.

Is Harris running in 2010?

CENTREVILLE -- State Sen. Andy Harris (R-Cockeysville) said Monday he'll be running for Maryland's 1st Congressional District seat again in 2010, according to Queen Anne's County Republican Central Committee member Diana Waterman.

"Andy said Monday night he's gonna run again," Waterman said at Wednesday's Central Committee meeting at the Centreville Public Library.

Kratovil attends freshman orientation

Incoming U.S. Rep. Frank Kratovil (D-Stevensville) began freshman orientation this week. The new member orientation for the 111th Congress consisted of various seminars - briefing the incoming members on a number of matters including getting around Capitol Hill, House rules and procedures,  and staffing, according to the Kratovil campaign.

Kratovil also attended his first meeting with the conservative Blue Dog Democratic caucus this week, which endorsed Kratovil during the general.

Gilchrest's son blasts Ehrlich in letter to Sun

Outgoing U.S. Rep. Wayne Gilchrest's (R-Kennedyville) son, Kevin Gilchrest, blasted former Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R-Baltimore) in a letter sent to The Baltimore Sun on Tuesday.

Kevin Gilchrest accused Ehrlich of endorsing state Sen. Andy Harris (R-Cockeysville) for all the wrong reasons. Harris knocked off Gilchrest in the 1st Congressional District's February primary, but Gilchrest endorsed Democrat Frank Kratovil, who ultimately won the race.
