Kipke: If furloughs pass, count me in

Del. Nic Kipke (R-Pasadena) announced Monday that if Gov. Martin O'Malley's (D-Baltimore) proposed furlough program is implemented, he'll voluntarily participate.
 
Last week, multiple news outlets reported a furlough proposal had begun circulating among labor union leaders. The proposal is just one of many steps O'Malley and state officials have taken to combat a grim economic outlook.

Former delegate attacked by wild deer, but doesn't miss meeting with House speaker

Delegate-turned-lobbyist Gilbert Genn (D-Montgomery County) was attacked by a wild deer last week, but that didn't stop him from attending his scheduled meeting with state House Speaker Michael E. Busch (D-Annapolis) before heading to the hospital.

Genn was leaving his Gaithersburg home Thursday to walk his dog, Yuffie, when the deer charged at him, according to WTOPnews.com.

House and Senate GOP oppose early voting amendment

House and Senate Republicans are opposing November's constitutional amendment that would authorize early voting in Maryland, claiming it's ripe for fraud, an unfunded mandate and unnecessary since the state already has an absentee ballot program.

But House and Senate Democrats are calling the argument ridiculous.

Voters will decide on November's ballot if the state constitution should be amended to authorize the General Assembly to allow qualified citizens to vote at polling places outside of their districts or up to two weeks before an election.

Miller to Franchot: 'Your bad habits have diminished your standing'

Comptroller Peter Franchot is stumbling through his second year in statewide office, according to state Senate President Thomas V. "Mike" Miller.

"Your bad habits have diminished your standing and reduced your effectiveness as Comptroller," wrote Miller (D-Chesapeake Beach) in a letter to Franchot (D-Takoma Park) on Thursday.

Miller's comments were in response to a note sent by Franchot earlier this week.

In Denver, Busch pumped for Clinton and Biden

“I’m excited about being on the floor tonight,” he told PolitickerMD.com, shortly after arriving.

Though Busch has been tuned into the convention via television, and said he was impressed by U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy’s Monday address.

Former U.S. attorney general to chair commission on capital punishment

ANNAPOLIS - Gov. Martin O’Malley announced Thursday the appointment of former U.S. Attorney General Benjamin Civiletti to chair the Maryland Commission on Capital Punishment. O’Malley and Civiletti were joined by Lt. Gov Anthony Brown (D) and state House Speaker Michael E. Busch (D-Annapolis).

According to O’Malley, Civliletti “rose to national prominence during the Carter administration.”

O’Malley swears in Adkins to Maryland’s highest court

ANNAPOLIS – Gov. Martin O’Malley swore in Judge Sally Adkins to the Court of Appeals Wednesday, Maryland’s highest court. Also attending the ceremony were state House Speaker Michael E. Serafini to be sworn in tomorrow

Tomorrow, Speaker Michael Busch will swear in Republican Andrew Serafini as the newest member of the House of Delegates.

Serafini was selected out of nineteen candidates for the vacant District 2A seat in Washington County.

The event at 2:00 p.m. will occur almost three weeks to the hour that former Del. Bob McKee resigned over an investigation of him possessing child pornography.
