Maryland: Mitt Romney

Romney will appear at a luncheon for the three-term Cockeysville state Senator, who defeated incumbent U.S. Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-Kennedyville) in the GOP primary earlier this year.

Former Lt. Gov. Michael Steele told PolitickerMD.com today that he would give “high consideration” to accepting a cabinet position if Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) is elected president in November and offers the Marylander a seat.

A new SurveyUSA poll taken in the 30 hours since Mitt Romney’s departure from the presidential race shows Sen. John McCain with a commanding lead in Maryland – 56% over former Gov. Mike Huckabee’s 17%.

Rep. Ron Paul achieved 10% in the survey of 360 likely GOP primary voters, which has a margin of error of 5.2% and was sponsored by WJLA-TV. “Other” received 12% – perhaps an indication of some Maryland Republicans' dissatisfaction with McCain.

4% remain undecided while 66% of those polled say their minds are made up.

UPDATE: Sources say that Romney did not give McCain prior notice of his intent to withdraw, and another implies that Romney will not be present at this evening's event. Tonight's endorsement is likely from former Gov. Bob Ehrlich.
