MoCo Federation of Teachers: 'Education should be funded on its own'

Using slots as a source for education funding is bad for the long-term needs of education, according to the Montgomery County Federation of Teachers, AFT, Local 1670.
 
"Education should be funded on its own, without a funding source like slot machines," Joseph Monte, MCFT's president, said in a statement in reference to November's slots referendum.

Anti-slots group bashes Sun's endorsement of Question 2

Anti-slots group Marylanders United to Stop Slots is lambasting The Baltimore Sun for its endorsement of November's controversial slots referendum.

"It is frankly a slap in the face to the voters of Maryland and an abdication of its editorial integrity," Scott Arceneaux, senior advisor of Marylanders United to Stop Slots, said in a statement.

Sun: Anti-slots group alters first radio ad

Anti-slots group Marylanders United to Stop Slots will be altering its first radio ad launched on Tuesday, according to The Baltimore Sun.

The ad mistakenly identified a group called the Baltimore United in Leadership Development as anti-slots.

"That's why the NACCP, the League of Women Voters, the I.M.A. and BUILD all oppose slots," says a man in the ad.

Battle over slots: Cash gap wide

Pro-slots organization For Maryland For Our Future substantially outraised its rival anti-slots group during the last financial period, according to reports filed last week with the State Board of Elections.

For Maryland For Our Future ended the last financial quarter with $558,848.04 cash-on-hand and $3,781,500 in total receipts.

Anti-slots ballot issue committee Marylanders United to Stop Slots ended with $142,896.34 cash-on-hand and $411,053 in total receipts.

Professional Fire Fighters of Maryland endorse slots

The Professional Fire Fighters of Maryland endorsed November's slots referendum on Thursday, according to pro-slots group For Maryland For Our Future. The organization represents the state's 20 affiliated locals of the International Association of Fire Fighters.

"Passing the slots referendum and keeping revenue here in Maryland - when it's already being spent in Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia - is critical to public safety," said Fire Fighters President LeRoy A.

McDonough unaware Willis served on anti-slots organization steering committee

Secretary of State John McDonough says he was not aware John Willis was on the Marylanders United to Stop Slots steering committee when he consulted with him about writing the language of the November slots referendum.

Voters will decide on November's ballot if the state constitution should be amended to allow no more than 15,000 slots machine installations at five different locations across the state.

Slots debate injects itself into the Preakness

As horseracing fans waited to see Big Brown and his competitors in Saturday's Preakness Stakes, the debate over whether the state should legalize the release of 15,000 slot machines could be felt in the stands at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

As the Associated Press reported Sunday, about 60 proponents of the November ballot referendum passed out 5,000 T-Shirts before the race that expressed support for slots. While the shirts may have been free, they were still nearly gone by noon.

Franchot headlines campaign to defeat slots referendum

ANNAPOLIS -- State Comptroller Peter Franchot (D) highlighted a series of guests who appeared at a rally this afternoon to speak out against the slots referendum, which will appear on the ballot in November.

Franchot appeared alongside members of the organization Marylanders United to Stop Slots.

Franchot explained his role with the group during an interview with PolitickerMD.com.

"Whatever they want me to do - I'm happy to consider," Franchot said.
