Frank receives lots of PAC money, gives heavily to other Dems

U.S. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Newton), the chairman of the powerful House Financial Services Committee, reported raising more than $380,000 in the second quarter of this year, over a third of the haul coming from political action committees, according to the Federal Election Commission.

Barney Frank (D-Newton)|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=116|height=180]Frank reported ending the quarter with $817,102 cash on hand, after beginning the quarter with $804,004. He raised $383,086 in the quarter, bringing his fundraising haul to $1,627,256 for the cycle.

In contributions, Frank received the majority of his funds from individuals in the second quarter ($225,255) but also brought in $142,960 from PACs. PACS have contributed $691,479 to Frank this cycle. Among his highest contributors, the United Bank of Switzerland America's Fund for Better Government gave Frank $10,000 over the course of the quarter. Pacific Life, the insurance company, gave Frank $2,000 through its PAC. Prudential Financial Inc.'s PAC also contributed $2,000 to Frank's war chest in the second quarter.

Two high profile lenders also popped up on Frank's list of contributors. Freddie Mac, the embattled home mortgage lender, gave Frank $2,500 this quarter as did another federal home lender, Fannie Mae.

Frank is facing a challenge this year from Republican Earl Sholley. Sholley's second quarter FEC report has yet to go live, but most analysts believe Frank's seat to be safe. Frank only spent $172, 518 on operating expenditures this quarter, choosing instead to dispense a significant chunk of his $370,618 in disbursements for the quarter to other Democratic candidates.

Most notably, Frank gave $100,000 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and $5,000 to the Massachusetts Democratic State Committee. Frank also gave a total of $6,000 to Kay Barnes, a Democratic congressional candidate in Missouri, and $4,000 to Mike McMahon, the Democratic candidate vying for the seat being vacated by Republican Rep. Vito Fossella in New York City. He also gave $4,000 to U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth, the freshman lawmaker seeking to hold his seat against Anne Northup, Republican lawmaker Yarmuth beat in 2006.

Frank also gave to two favorites of the Bay State's congressional delegation. He donated $2,000 to Joe Garcia, who is running against Florida Republican Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart and $4,000 to Don Cazayoux, the recently elected Louisiana congressman. Bay State Rep. Bill Delahunt (D-Quincy) also contributed to both Garcia and Cazayoux as did Reps. Richard Neal (D-Springfield) [LINK:  ] and Jim McGovern (D-Worcester).
