U.S. Sen. John Kerry, who was the victim of what many have deemed inaccurate attacks on his military record as the Democratic presidential nominee in 2004, has launched a [img_assist|nid=30|title=Sen. John Kerry (D-Boston)|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=123|height=180]Web site that seeks to debunk any and all smear attacks against presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama.
The Web site, www.TruthFightsBack.com, is funded by Kerry's PAC and is dedicated to fighting the spread of inaccurate information about Democratic politicians.
"This site empowers you to fight against the rightwing smear machines," the top of the site reads. "That machine is bigger than any one campaign and doesn't end after any one election. So get involved and fight back with the truth."
In particular, the site is targeting Jerome Corsi, an author who attacked Kerry's (D-Boston) military service in 2004 and has recently published a book criticizing Obama. The site, which is run by Kerry's internet director, Brian Young, also allows users to report smears they have seen and to sign up to receive e-mails debunking the smears that have been reported.
In a message sent to his e-mail list, Kerry said Obama is currently being targeted by one of the most extensive smear campaigns ever, including Corsi's book. "And it's not just Barack," Kerry writes, "up and down the ticket and all across the country, the rightwing smear machine is ramping up attacks on Democrats."
"We've seen this movie before," Kerry said. "The Republicans, without ideas, start running a negative campaign filled with personal attacks and misleading ads. The attacks get condemned, but they get lots of attention and get played on TV endlessly."
Kerry also implicitly stated in the e-mail that he has learned from the attacks he faced in 2004. "We know the game, we've learned some things, and we have a fired up movement of activists like no party has had in decades, all networked together with great Internet tools."
