Patrick has ‘butterflies’ about his primetime speech

[img_assist|nid=829|title=Gov. Deval Patrick|desc=Politicker Photo|link=none|align=none|width=400|height=309]DENVER – In a brief press conference Monday morning, Gov. Deval Patrick said that he has some “butterflies” in his stomach for his primetime speech Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention.

Patrick, speaking to local reporters at the Massachusetts’ delegation’s hotel, chuckled when he said he was quite nervous about the speech and said that he is reassured by the five-minute time limit.

He wouldn’t give any indication as to what he’ll speak about, though, besides saying that he “believes in the American story” and that the themes of the speech “will not come as a surprise.”

The governor, a close friend and supporter of presumptive Democratic nominee, scoffed at questions about new polls showing the race between presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama (Ill.) and presumptive Republican nominee John McCain (Ariz.) tightening.

Patrick said he is “deeply skeptical” of polls. He also pointed to the increase in young voters that have become involved in the process this year as a reason why the polls may be wrong.

Those young voters, Patrick said, only use cell phones and aren’t part of these poll’s universe. Patrick also chuckled when asked again if he would consider leaving the Statehouse for a spot in an Obama administration. “I’m not going,” he said.

The governor also said that he is looking forward to the tribute to U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Hyannis Port) and was happy to hear the Kennedy was in Denver (the news of Kennedy’s arrival broke while Patrick was speaking to the Massachusetts delegation at its breakfast).

Patrick is likely to miss the tribute, however, because he is flying back to Massachusetts this evening to attend the funeral of the Mashpee serviceman killed in Iraq tomorrow.
