Wilkerson dismisses Chang-Diaz poll, says her organization is the key to victory

DENVER -- State Sen. Dianne Wilkerson said this week that her campaign organization is strong and dismissed a recent internal poll released by challenger Sonia Chang-Diaz that showed Wilkerson trailing by a significant margin.

Dianne Wilkerson (D-Boston)|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=154|height=180]In an interview after the Massachusetts delegation breakfast Wednesday, Wilkerson (D-Boston) told PolitickerMA.com that her campaign is "fast at work." Since she left to attend the convention, the campaign "hasn't missed a beat" and she has spent two hours a day on the phone with her organization making sure she is up to speed on any new developments.

In particular, Wilkerson said her campaign is "counting heads" and "counting our vote."

Wilkerson is currently in her second race against Chang-Diaz, who also challenged Wilkerson in 2006. The race has been a puzzle for many political analysts, with many saying that if Chang-Diaz was going to unseat Wilkerson, she would have done it in 2006.

That conventional wisdom was questioned on August 18, however, when Chang-Diaz released an internal poll that showed she was leading Wilkerson by 17.5 percent.

When asked about the poll, Wilkerson chuckled and said that Chang-Diaz released a similar poll in 2006. She said the district, the 2nd Suffolk District, is difficult to poll accurately. She also said that she knows how the districts vote breaks down and where she has the most support.

"I know where the vote is," she said. "That's why I've been here 16 years."

Wilkerson said she is confident her campaign team will prevail on Election Day.

"This election will come down to who is better organized," she said. "That's why I am confident that I will win."
