Watertown heads for House race showdown

Hecht and Fahey are seeking the Democratic nomination to replace state Rep. Rachel Kaprielian, who was appointed head of the Registry of Motor Vehicles. The race will also be determined entirely on write-in and sticker ballots since no candidate had time to file the requisite number of signatures after Kaprielian stepped down. Stephen Corbett, who, like Hecht, is a Watertown councilor, is also running.

PolitickerMA.com asked voters in and around the Hellenic Cultural Center, the polling place for Watertown's first and third precincts, who they voted for Tuesday. The results were a mixed bag.

"I voted for Jonathan," said Olga Proudian. "He's a very nice young man and we need such people on Beacon Hill."

Fahey supporter Jim O'Reilly was standing outside with his sister, Kristin Fitzgerald, holding Fahey signs and distributing stickers. Both O'Reilly and Fitzgerald are Fahey's cousins and O'Reilly said said Fahey is very qualified from her work as an attorney.

"She really puts people first," he said.

O'Reilly and Fitzgerald are also cousins of U.S. Senate candidate Ed O'Reilly. O'Reilly said there is a definite overlap between the supporters of both candidates.

"If you are going to vote for O'Reilly," he said, referring to the Senate challenger, "You're going to vote for Fahey."

"We need new blood in the Senate," Fitzgerald, whose maiden name is O'Reilly, added.

O'Reilly and Fitzgerald were flanked to their immediate left by Harmik Avedians, who was holding a Hecht side proudly. Avedians, who is of Armenian descent, said Hecht's understand of the Armenian genocide of 1915.

"It seems to me that Mr. Hecht is in-line with the issues that are important to the Armenian community," Avedians said.
