Eldridge opposes Question 1

State Rep. Jamie Eldridge, who is vying for the Middlesex-Worcester state Senate seat, voiced his opposition to Question 1 on Tuesday.

Eldridge, an Acton Democrat, is currently vying for Pam Resor's Middlesex-Worcester state Senate seat against Marlborough Republican Steven Levy. Resor is retiring from the seat.

The Democrat told PolitickerMA.com that passing Question 1, which would repeal the state income tax, would have terrible effects on the state's finances.

"I oppose Ballot Question 1, repealing the current 5.3 percent income tax," Eldridge said. "Repealing it would decimate the state budget, taking $11 billion out of a $28 billion state budget. This would also decimate local aid from the state to our towns and cities, all but guaranteeing either significant hikes in property taxes or tremendous cuts in our public schools and public safety. Repealing the income tax altogether is grossly irresponsible fiscal policy."
