Tsongas urges supporters to canvass in N.H. for Obama

Congresswoman Niki Tsongas isn't facing a challenger in this year's election but that isn't preventing her from keeping busy through Election Day.

[img_assist|nid=430|title=U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas (D-Lowell)|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=119|height=180]Tsongas, a Lowell Democrat, told PolitickerMA.com that she is focused on two tasks in these last 25 days before Nov. 4: Spending time in her district and helping Barack Obama win the presidential election.

"I'm doing what I can to help Obama," she said. "Whatever is asked of me, that's what I'll do."

Tsongas has been organizing bus trips to New Hampshire for her supporters on the Saturdays leading up to the election. In previous trips, approximately 25 supporters have made the trip to the Granite State, but Tsongas' office said they expect that number to grow.

The Democrat also said she plans to spend time in her 5th Congressional District. In particular, she wants to see how the current financial crisis is impacting her constituents.

Tsongas has kept a busy schedule of campaign events. On Wednesday she attended a "Women for Obama" event in Massachusetts and will be attending a rally for Obama in Harvard in the coming days.

In addition to encouraging her supporters to work for Obama, Tsongas is also telling them to canvass for Jeanne Shaheen, the Democrat locked in a tight race this year with New Hampshire Sen. John Sununu.

And Tsongas has an extra incentive for campaigning for Obama in New Hampshire: Her daughter, Katina, is Obama's field director in the Granite State.

"If nothing else, it gives me a chance to see her," Tsongas said.
