Republican Sonny Parente and Democrat Kate Hogan, the candidates vying for state Rep. Patricia Walrath's 3rd Middlesex District seat, agreed this week that Question 1's success would be bad for the Bay State.

Both said the measure, which would eliminate the state's income tax, would have disastrous effects on the state's fiscal standing.

"I can't support Question 1 because it would basically take our local economy and push it off a cliff," Hogan, of Stow, said. "It would really wreck the economy. The Republicans have done a great deal to wreck our economy and the Democrats will come up with some solutions to the situation that we're in."

"Passing Question 1 is not a solution," she added.

Both candidates said they understand taxpayers frustration and Parente suggested the voters are particularly angry at the legislature.

"People are sick and tired of the spending problems we have in Massachusetts and people are tired of the legislature not listening to them," Parente, of Hudson, said.

However, Parente said Question 1 is not a viable option. "Realistically," he said, "it is not responsible to vote for it because it of what it will do to our local aid budget."

Instead of voting for Question 1, Parente said he has been telling voters to cast their ballot for Republicans.

"I'll vote against it," Parente said of Question 1, "because I urge people to vote for Republicans that will be responsible about spending."
