Favs/Unfavs from Suffolk/7News poll show Patrick, Coakley among most popular

Buried in the crosstabs of Thursday night's Suffolk University/7News poll are some interesting favorability numbers for state's top politicians, several of which are often rumored to be interested in seeking higher office than the one they currently inhabit.

The crosstabs, made available to PolitickerMA.com, show that the majority of Massachusetts voters have a favorable opinion of Gov. Deval Patrick and that Attorney General Martha Coakley is among the most well-known and more favorably viewed of other Massachusetts politicians.

Fifty-seven percent of respondents said they have a favorable view of Patrick, a Milton Democrat, while 23 percent said they view the governor unfavorably. Just four percent had never heard of him and 16 percent had no opinion.

Patrick scored well on this question across party lines, with a plurality of Democrats (68 percent), Republicans (41 percent) and Independents (54 percent) all saying they view him favorably. Republicans had the most negative view of Patrick, with 37 percent giving him unfavorable marks.

Coakley's popularity was also evident in her numbers. The attorney outperformed both Treasurer Tim Cahill and Lt. Gov. Tim Murray in name recognition, as only 18 percent hadn't heard of Coakley, compared to 21 percent for Cahill and 36 percent for Murray.

Forty-three percent of respondents viewed Coakley favorably, compared to 14 percent that viewed her unfavorably. Like Patrick, a plurality of voters from each political party gave the Medford Democrat favorable marks, with 48 percent of Democrats, 44 percent of Republicans and 40 percent of Independents giving her high marks. Twenty-five percent of respondents knew of Coakley, but had no opinion of her.

Cahill, a Quincy Democrat, was viewed favorably by 36 percent of respondents, compared to 11 percent that viewed him unfavorably. The treasurer scored nearly identical favorable marks in all three parties, though he scored best with Independents (38 percent) then Republicans (36 percent) then Democrats (34 percent). Thirty-three percent said had heard of Cahill but had no opinion of him.

Murray, on the other hand, scored best among Democrats. In general, 36 percent of respondents viewed the Worcester Democrat favorably, while 10 percent had an unfavorable opinion and 29 percent had no opinion. Thirty-one percent of Democrats gave Murray favorable marks, compared to 20 percent of Republicans and 25 of Independents.
