Walsh shifts support to Chang-Diaz

After promising to stay uncommitted in the general election, state Rep. Marty Walsh endorsed Sonia Chang-Diaz on Wednesday in light of state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson's corruption allegations.

Walsh, a Dorchester Democrat, endorsed Wilkerson in her primary race against Chang-Diaz. After Wilkerson lost the primary, however, Walsh said he was uncommitted in the general election since Wilkerson vowed to run a write-in campaign.

But since Wilkerson's arrest Tuesday, Walsh told PolitickerMA.com that Chang-Diaz deserved the seat. Asked if he was switching his support to Chang-Diaz, Walsh replied, "Absolutely."

Walsh said he believes Wilkerson is innocent until she is proven guilty, but added that even if Wilkerson is not found guilty, these allegations will hinder her ability to represent the district.

"The 2nd Suffolk District needs someone who can hit the ground running right now," Walsh said. "And in light of everything that happened, I think Sonia Chang-Diaz deserves to be the senator there."
