Election officials: Turnout already high

MARLBOROUGH - Election officials at the Francis J. Kane school polling place here said that they could tell turnout is going to be high as soon as the doors opened at 7 a.m.

Betty Peltekis, an election warden, said the line started forming in front of the school at 6:15 a.m. By 6:45 a.m., the line was already wrapping around the school.

Asked if she thinks turnout will reach record highs, Peltekis replied: "Oh yeah."

By 8 a.m., 400 voters had cast their ballots at this polling place, which serves two wards in Marlborough, according to election officials.

Secretary of State William Galvin said last week that 3 million Massachusetts voters may vote on Tuesday. That would be 71 percent of the eligible electorate and would set a new record for Massachusetts.

Peltekis said election officials are doing everything they normally do to accommodate the large crowds and are making sure they have plenty of ballots ready.

"We're just trying to be as helpful as possible," she said.

Officials at this polling place, which lies in Middlesex's 4th state House District and the Middlesex-Worcester state Senate District, had their operation running smoothly, as the long line had vanished within 30 minutes of the doors opening.
