Marlborough voters share mixed opinions on Question 1

MARLBOROUGH - Some of the voters who came early to the polling place at the Francis J. Kane School shared mixed views on Question 1, the high profile ballot measure that would abolish the state income tax.

If successful, Question 1 would cost the state approximately $12 billion in revenues. Opponents, including most officials on Beacon Hill, say the plan would obliterate state services. Proponents say it would be easy to cut that much waste out of the state government's budget.

While waiting to vote, Doug Steinfeld said the measure would disproportionately affect those that rely on state services.

"I think it's ridiculous," Steinfeld, of Marlborough, said. "I think it's vindictive against those who need the services that the income tax funds."

Another voter said Massachusetts voters are over-taxed and he could use the over $3,000 that supporters of the measure say every resident will save without an income tax.

"I pay $13,000 per year in income taxes," Tim, who declined to provide his last name, said. "I think a lot of people get around the income tax. You only pay income tax on what you disclose to the government."

Tim said he is a libertarian and that the government could make up the cuts Question 1 would cause elsewhere.

The most recent polling suggested Question 1 is heading for defeat on Election Day. A 7News/Suffolk University poll at the end of October showed 59 percent of voters oppose the measure and 26 percent favored it.

Julia Richardson, also of Marlborough, said she has experience living with no income tax because she was raised in New Hampshire. Richardson, however, opposes Question 1.

"It's nice to say that there is no income tax," she said, "but you kind of need it."
