Wilkerson: I’ll resign ‘as soon as I can’

Facing charges that she accepted $23,500 in bribes, state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson said Wednesday that she will resign from office as soon as she can.

"I am committed to resigning my office as soon as I can do so consistent with my need to effectuate an orderly transition," Wilkerson, a Boston Democrat, said in a statement.

Wilkerson said that she will resign after finishing "hundreds of active constituent matters," clearing out her files and helping her staff find new jobs.

Until last week, Wilkerson was seeking to defend her seat in a sticker campaign against Sonia Chang-Diaz, who beat Wilkerson in the Democratic primary this year. She ended her sticker campaign after she was arrested last week for allegedly accepting bribes.

Days after the arrest, her colleagues in the Senate unanimously called for her resignation.

Wilkerson concluded her statement by stating that "it is not possible to set a date on which this process will be complete, other than to say it will be as soon as humanly and responsibly possible."

Wilkerson also said she would not comment on her resignation again.
