Rushing to receive award for fighting homelessness

State Rep. Byron Rushing will receive an award Wednesday for his work to end elder homelessness, according to the organization presenting him with the honor.

Rushing, a Boston Democrat, will receive a Distinguished Service Award from the Hearth Inc., a Boston nonprofit that works to end homelessness among the elderly. In a release, the nonprofit said that Rushing, a co-chair of the Commission to End Homelessness, has been an influential supporter of its mission.

"Rushing deserves this award for his unceasing efforts to end homelessness, and his passionate advocacy and compassion towards the homeless, the frail and the elderly," Mark Hinderlie, Hearth's president, said in a statement. "His caring leadership and unflagging commitment have inspired us, supported us, and continue to comfort us in the challenging days of the economic distress we face right now."

Rushing will receive the award at Hearth's annual meeting Wednesday in Boston.
