Anti-toll hike group to rally Wednesday

Shortly after legislators hold a public hearing Wednesday on the issues surrounding privatizing the Massachusetts turnpike and Big Dig Tunnels, a group including some elected officials who oppose any increase in pike tolls is planning to rally in East Boston.

The "Stop the Pike Hike Rally" is scheduled to occur at 4 P.M. Wednesday at the Ecco Restaurant and Martini Bar in East Boston, according to a flyer for the event. Christy Mihos, a former member of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and potential 2010 gubernatorial candidate, is scheduled to speak at the rally, as is state Sen. Scott Brown (R-Wrentham) and state Rep. Carlo Basile (D-East Boston).

The hearing on Beacon Hill Wednesday is set to discuss leasing the pike and the Big Dig tunnels to a private company. That option would bring the commonwealth a significant amount of money in the short term, but observers worry that it could lead to increases in tolls that would exceed those the state would impose in the long term.
