Strategists: Patrick’s approval rating tied to the economy

Two prominent political analysts say Gov. Deval Patrick's approval numbers have headed south in conjunction with the economy's deterioration.

A SurveyUSA/WBZ-TV poll released this week showed that 50 percent of those surveyed disapprove of the job Patrick, a Milton Democrat, is doing, while 45 percent approved.

Stephen Ansolabehere, a prominent political scientist at Harvard University, told PolitickerMA.com that pols across the country seeing their approval ratings take a hit during the country's recession.

"Every political leader and institution has experienced a large drop in support and approval with the general slowdown in the economy," Ansolabehere said. "I think this reflects the general trend."

Dan Payne, a local Democratic strategist, echoed those thoughts.

"It's important to maintain perspective here," Payne said. "He's two years into a four-year journey. Deval's problems aren't political, they're financial -- the state is broke."

Patrick, Payne added, is showing is willingness to tackle the difficult economic issues that state currently faces.
