Menino outraises, outspends possible 2009 challengers

Facing the prospect of two potential challengers in next year's election, Boston Mayor Tom Menino raised significantly more money than his potential challengers in the last two weeks of November, according to recent campaign finance reports.

Menino also spent more than those two potential opponents, Boston City Councilors Sam Yoon and Michael Flaherty, including $30,000 to a California opinion research firm.

Menino, who would be seeking his fifth term in 2009, finished November with more than $366,500 in his  account.

That was significantly more than Flaherty and Yoon, both of whom are considering challenging Menino. Flaherty finished the month with $135,600 in his account and Yoon had $59,900.

Menino raised more $45,725 in the last two weeks of November while spending $47,135. Of that, $30,000 went to Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin and Associates, Inc., a "consultant" in Santa Monica, Calif., that conducts opinion research, including polling and focus groups.

Flaherty raked in $25,110 during that time, while spending $13,262. He paid $4,000 to Tricia Wajda of Roxbury for consulting.

Yoon raised $2,975 in that period and spent only $956.
