AP: Brockton native under consideration to be ‘car czar’

Kenneth Feinberg, a Brockton native and administrator of the Sept. 11 Victim Compensation Fund, is under consideration to oversee the $15 billion bailout of the auto industry, the Associated Press reports.

Congressional leaders sent the bailout plan, which would provide auto companies with $15 billion in federal loans, to the White House Monday afternoon. President George W. Bush has yet to sign off on it.

The plan also calls for the president appointing a "car czar" who would author guidelines for how General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co., and Chrysler LLC must restructure. If the companies fail to follow the guidelines, the czar would take back the money.

The AP cites "congressional officials" that say Feinberg is being looked at to be "car czar."

The Enterprise reported Tuesday that Harry Williams III, the director of the Brockton Public Library and a close friend of Feinberg's, said Feinberg is qualified for the job.

"He has the mind for it and he especially has the respect," Williams said, according to the Enterprise. "The people who have to be reeled in are used to calling all the shots. Now they have to have it explained to them. He would be a good choice, though I don't know if I would wish it on him."
