Yoon calls for Boston commissions to post information online

Boston City Councilor Sam Yoon introduced legislation on Wednesday that would require all of the city's commissions and boards all information relative to members and meetings on the internet.

Yoon, of Dorchester, said the legislation seeks to increase citizens' access to government.

"I am a strong advocate of open and accountable government that acts within clearly established boundaries," Yoon said in a statement. "A government that can act arbitrarily and in secret invites corruption, special pleading and trading favors."

Yoon's proposal comes on the heels of the arrests of fellow City Councilor and former state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson for allegedly taking bribes to help a nightclub obtain a liquor license from the Boston Licensing Board. Yoon noted in his release that the licensing board currently does not publish its members and minutes from its meetings.

"To restore people's confidence in government," Yoon, who is considering running for mayor next year, "we must change the system that allows officials to act in secret without accountability."
