Nassour unveils plan for the future of the Mass. GOP

Republican State Committee member Jennifer Nassour, the only declared candidate for chairman of the state GOP, unveiled her plan for the future of the party to the State Committee this week.

The plan, which she told PolitickerMA.com is still a work in progress, is a seven-page long document that focuses on four broad areas - fundraising, grassroots organization, messaging and outreach - and calls for the party to more aggressively draw contrasts with Democrats.

"The party must regain its outspoken voice and spread its message to the grassroots in order to reach all corners of the commonwealth," Nassour, of Boston, wrote. "A traditional strength of the MassGOP has been articulating Republican values and policies while exposing the weaknesses of Democratic initiatives and actions."

As far as ideology, Nassour wrote the party should focus on its advocacy for job creation and entrepreneurship, individual responsibility, defending family values and limited government and taxation.

Nassour begins the plan by saying that the GOP must "rebuild from the bottom up" and emphasized grassroots organizing.

"The new direction of the MassGOP must be up, and that movement must begin at the grassroots," she wrote.

Nassour called for focusing on the GOP at the most local levels - the town, city and ward committees - and for registering new Republican voters.

On fund-raising, Nassour proposed creating a finance chair for the party and holding more low-dollar fundraisers to get more people involved in the party. She also suggested targeting special demographics, such as women and younger voters, with fund-raising appeals and events that would attract them. She also said the party should solicit contributions from out of state donors "with an appeal to rebuild the GOP in the ‘bluest of states.'"

Nassour also wrote that she would not take any salary to save the party money, but would "reinstate when performance warrants it."

Nassour also indicated a focus on recruiting candidates and a "farm team." Because of the party's limited resources, she suggested a "rifle approach" for the 2010 races, whereby the party would target vulnerable Democrats and identify possible open seats early.

"The MassGOP must begin immediately recruiting and supporting candidates in order to be competitive in races for the constitutional offices and targeted congressional and state legislative contests," she wrote.

In addition, Nassour would approach current and former Republican office holders about mentoring new candidates.

Nassour also indicated that she sees an opportunity for Republicans given the current ethics scandals.

"[The] MassGOP must hold Democrats accountable for the ongoing corruption and ethics violations on Beacon Hill," she wrote.
