Mass. GOP decries Aloisi pick as ‘hypocrisy’

The Massachusetts Republican Party jumped on Gov. Deval Patrick's selection of James Aloisi to be the state's next transportation secretary on Friday, blasting the governor for going back on his campaign promise to fight "Big Dig culture."

Patrick, a Milton Democrat, announced that Aloisi, a former general counsel for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, will take over for Bernard Cohen in the post at the beginning of next year.

Barney Keller, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Republican Party, said the pick is an example of Patrick not following through on a campaign promise.

"The hypocrisy of this appointment is staggering," Keller said. "James Aloisi is the embodiment of the ‘Big Dig culture' that Candidate Patrick once decried....[T]his sends a signal to the people of Massachusetts that there is no promise too great for Gov. Patrick to break."
