Scotland Willis, a Roxbury business consultant, announced on Monday that he is running for an at-large seat on the Boston City Council in 2009.
"My family was first, and I want you to be second to know that I have decided to run for Boston City Council at-large," Willis wrote in a letter to Boston residents.
In the letter, Willis touted his experience as a former business owner, community organizer and business management and sustainability consultant and said his campaign will focus on a five pronged platform: Education, job creation, sustainability, public safety, public engagement
"While these might sound like familiar themes, it is important to acknowledge that they represent the reality of our landscape," Willis wrote. "In the coming months, it will be my priority to hear and learn from the different voices throughout our city and respond with concrete answers."
In an email to PolitickerMA.com, Willis acknowledged the challenges he faces in a seemingly ever-growing field of candidates.
"I don't have a big name but I have a lot of innovative ideas that I believe people will buy into," he said. "They need to be worked on and polished, but I am planning to get input from authorities who can help me with that."
Willis also noted that he was moved to run by Barack Obama's recent election as president in his letter.
"I am certain that I can get the job done and feel fully inspired by the recent success of Barack Obama- soon to be our 44th President of the United States," he wrote. "It is the dawning of a new era of thinking, where the norm will be people working through their differences for a collective success. It is important that we all take a more active role in our civic responsibility, as citizens and voters- to shape what happens in our communities."
