Kerry skips trip for Senate votes

U.S. Sen. John Kerry has decided against leaving the country this week with a Congressional Delegation to stay in Washington, D.C., for votes this weekend, The Hill reports.

Kerry was scheduled to traveled to Southwest Asia this week with Vice President-elect Joe Biden, Sens. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).

Jones defends leadership vote process

State Rep. Brad Jones on Thursday defended the process by which he was re-elected minority leader, saying challenger Lewis Evangelidis' criticisms are off base.

Jones, a North Reading Republican, was re-elected on Wednesday in a nine to seven vote. Following the vote, Evangelidis ripped Jones for "shut[ing] down debate" and refusing to conduct the election by a secret ballot.

Another Harvard Law prof. heads to Obama administration

Harvard Law School Professor Cass Sunstein is slated to become a top regulatory official in President-elect Barack Obama's administration, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

Sunstein will head the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, the Washington Post reports, citing an anonymous transition official.

Polito refuses pay raise

Citing the state's and her constituents' financial woes, State Rep. Karyn Polito said Thursday that she will not take the 5.5 percent pay raise being given to state legislators.

On Wednesday, Gov. Deval Patrick (D-Milton) sent a letter to Treasurer Tim Cahill (D-Quincy) authorizing a 5.5 percent pay raise for legislators based on the change in median household income. That amounts to approximately a $3,200 per year pay hike.

Kerry announces Foreign Relations staff

As the incoming chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, U.S. Sen. John Kerry announced the committee's staff for the 111th Congress on Thursday.

David McKean, who has worked as Kerry's chief of staff since 1999, will become staff director of the committee. Kerry also named Doug Frantz, a former investigative journalist for the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times, as the committee's chief investigator.
