Mass. GOP decries Aloisi pick as ‘hypocrisy’

The Massachusetts Republican Party jumped on Gov. Deval Patrick's selection of James Aloisi to be the state's next transportation secretary on Friday, blasting the governor for going back on his campaign promise to fight "Big Dig culture."

Patrick, a Milton Democrat, announced that Aloisi, a former general counsel for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, will take over for Bernard Cohen in the post at the beginning of next year.

Patrick taps Aloisi to be transportation secretary

After a week of speculation, Gov. Deval Patrick announced on Friday that James Aloisi will serve as the state's next transportation secretary.

"Jim brings a deep understanding of the challenges we face in reforming our transportation network," Patrick, a Milton Democrat, said in a statement. "He will be a skilled and energetic advocate for our reform agenda."

Patrick's announcement comes after a week of reports that Patrick was considering replacing Bernard Cohen, who resigned from the post this week, with Aloisi.

Patrick meets with congressional delegation on stimulus package

Gov. Deval Patrick met with the Bay State's congressional delegation on Wednesday to discuss how the state may benefit from a stimulus package currently being worked out in Congress, the Associated Press reports.

The stimulus plan is still in its early stages, but members of the delegation told Patrick, a Milton Democrat, that infrastructure projects, such as bridges, will likely be an area for which they will seek to secure funding.

Poll: Bay Staters overwhelmingly opposed to raising taxes to pay off state debts

A recent poll showed that Massachusetts residents overwhelmingly oppose any increase in taxes or tolls to help the state pay off its Big Dig debt and the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority's debts.

The poll was conducted Thursday by SurveyUSA as news broke that Gov. Deval Patrick (D-Milton) is proposing to guarantee the turnpike authority's $2.4 million debt and that taxpayers will be responsible for paying off the state's $22 billion remaining debt for the Big Dig.
