Help Boston Host the 2014 Gay Games

Dear BMG Readers,

As you may know, Boston is one of three cities currently in the running to host the world's Gay Games in 2014. The Games are an international Olympic-style athletic and cultural event that are held every four years, with next year's events taking place in Cologne, Germany. The events are open to all who wish to participate regardless of sexual orientation and athletic skill level and could draw as many as 12,000 participants and 100,000 spectators to Boston.

I am proud to say that the Boston City Council has unanimously voted to approve the resolution I authored demonstrating the Boston City Council's support for Boston to serve as host city to the Gay Games, but this is obviously just a small first step.

Boston's Green Agenda and an Invitation to Local Global Climate Change Summits

Thank you again to the BMG community for your comments on the Shared Bike Program legislation that I filed with the Boston City Council last summer.  To bring you up to speed on this initiative, the City’s Request for Information (RFI) was released last summer and all submissions were due this past November.  The City is making the Request for Proposals available during the first week of March.  I continue to meet with community biking leaders to discuss how best to implement a shared bike program and I intend to hold a hearing this spring to bring the administration and community leaders together to discuss the City’s progress on shared bike.

Tomas Jumps In

Dot Reporter gets the scoop that Tomas Gonzalez has changed his mind and will run for an at-large seat on the Boston City Council. Gonzalez has been probably the single most-mentioned name since Council '09 rumor-mongering kicked off, and he'll be a major player. Gonzalez who lives in Menino's own Hyde Park, has served with the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services and Commission on Affairs of the Elderly -- both superb opportunities to become known to voting residents. He currently works for BU's Medical Campus.

By my current count, Gonzalez is the 876th male candidate in the race, and not one woman. Not one. None. Zero. Noooooo women.

A Guide To The Talking Politics Blog's Inside References

This blog has been picking up some new readers, perhaps because the city election year is starting, perhaps in part as a result of my efforts to build up my Facebook network.  (If you're not my FB friend yet, please friend me, and encourage anyone else interested in politics to do so as well!)

As is true for many blogs, this one has a tendency to repeat certain assumptions or references without explanation. For example, for a month now this blog has been goading John Kerry aide Ayanna Pressley to run for Boston City Council. You might suspect that I have some motive for this -- that I think she'd be a terrific councilor, or that she's a friend of mine, or that I have some personal stake in her candidacy.

Boston Politics: Where Are The Women?

Now that Sam Yoon has thrown his proverbial hat into the ring, officially opening a second at-large city council seat, one would think the temptation to run would be overwhelming for wannabes all over town. We already have a good field of solid candidates: in addition to incumbents John Connolly and Steve Murphy, the list includes Felix G. Arroyo, Doug Bennett, Marty Hogan, Andrew Kenneally, Jean Claude Sanon, and Bob Terrell.

Arroyo already has an impressive $23,000 in his campaign account, and Kenneally has $13,000. Bennett has $7500.

But nobody new has announced, or formed a campaign committee, since the start of the year.

Susan Passoni running for State Rep

We've been speculating about who will run to replace Sal DiMasi in Boston's 3rd Suffolk state house district.  Someone mentioned Susan Passoni and I said I hope she runs.  Well, it turns out she is going to run!

I remember Susan Passoni from her 2007 run for Boston City Council, where she came in "surprisingly close" according to Blue Mass Group.  During that race, sco interviewed her for .08 acres.  She focused on education and housing; clearly understood and talked about the fact that education leads to economic growth, something we've discussed recently.

Interestingly, the 3rd Suffolk house district overlaps with the city council district she ran for.

Transparency is a two way street

Thank you Secretary Kirwan!

ONE Massachusetts has a commitment to work for a more transparent, accessible and accountable state and local policy-making process.Toward that end, Yawu Miller on behalf of ONE Mass  submitted testimony to the Governor’s Public Integrity Task Force and Boston City Council on the importance of transparency in the policy making process.

It has become clear to us that public support for government increases when people know that their taxes are assessed in a way that’s fair and that the revenues our government collects are being spent wisely.

I'm Running for Mayor of Boston

Dear Blue Mass Group,

I'm pleased to announce that I am running for Mayor of Boston.   I'm running to bring open, honest, transparent government to Boston City Hall, something that I believe everyone on this blog would agree needs to be done.

I've been an occasional poster and commenter, and frequent reader over the years.   I'd like to thank David, Bob and Charlie for setting up this wonderful forum where citizens can respectively (for the most part!) discuss the issues of the day.  It is this sort of dialogue that I believe we need to bring to all forms of government.

If elected, I will continue to stay in touch, ask for your input and advice, and still continue to post.
