What's next for the shrinking Globe

Working harder isn't going to do it once the Boston Globe has finished with its current round of 50 reductions to the newsroom staff. Once that process has been completed, the news staff will have shrunk from about 550 full-time journalists (or their equivalent) in 2000 to roughly 330. That means the Globe will, of necessity, be a fundamentally different paper.

This Friday, I'm going to be talking about the future of local news on "Radio Boston," on WBUR (90.9 FM), from 1 to 2 p.m., along with Adam Gaffin of Universal Hub and Globe regional editor David Dahl. I've been thinking about these ideas for a while, and this seems like as good a time as any to put them out there.

Going meta

The Globe has published a story about Jim Aloisi's blog post that criticized a Globe story.  So I thought I'd write a blog post about the Globe's story about Aloisi's blog post about the Globe story.

Today's Globe story reports that Aloisi has issued an apology for his "ill-advised statement on Blue Mass Group where [he] wrongly impugned the integrity of the Boston Globe and its reporter Andrea Estes," and that he has promised to move forward with "greater humility."  The Globe also quotes me:

David Kravitz, a Blue Mass. Group founder, said he wants the blog "to be part of the conversation about what's going on in the state.

Musical Diplomacy: A Concert and Discussion on Rights and Responsibilities

A group of New England Conservatory students have put together a concert and panel discussion focusing on the relationship between music and current political issues, or more specifically, human rights violations in wartime.

The concert will feature three new compositions, one of which incorporates clips from a broadcast on Guantanamo Bay by This American Life. The panel discussion following will be headed up by Harvard PhD's, faculty of NEC, Tufts, and National Defense University, and a reporter from the Boston Globe.

The event on Thursday, March 12th is free, open to the public, and to be followed by a reception.

My email to Senator Collins

At Bill's behest, I called CAF's special toll free number (866-544-7573) to get connected to the Capitol switchboard and support the stimulus.

After the introductory message, it connected me to the switchboard. All circuits busy. Wow.

So, I sent this in to Sen. Collins via her "email" form.

Dear Senator,

I was very surprised and disappointed that because of your work on the stimulus package, states will lose out on help that they need to provide critical services. All across America, states are laying off teachers, police, firefighters, and other employees who provide necessary services, such as those to the elderly. In Massachusetts, the Boston Globe reports today that elder abuse and neglect has skyrocketed, in part because the programs that take care of the elderly have been cut.

Senate votes against independent redistricting

Remember when Blue Mass Group endorsed the idea of placing an Independent commission in charge of redistricting, with hopes the state could avoid the problems of the past?

Remember how this idea was supported by the League of Women Voters, Common Cause, the NAACP, Oiste, the Boston Globe, the Boston Herald, Govs. Dukakis and Romney, Barney Frank, and Deval Patrick?

And remember how a bill doing this exact thing was supported by 12 senators last year?

Yea, well the Senate rejected the idea on Thursday by a vote of 7-28.

From the SHNS account:

[The Republicans] noted that several of the Democrats now voting against independent redistricting - Sens.
