"I cannot in good faith ask, nor can I justify asking taxpayers to fork over even more of their hard earned dollars to support Governor Patrick's misplaced priorities," said Representative Brad Jones. "In the last year alone, the Democrats with much opposition from the Republicans, have passed the largest corporate tax increase in history, raised the cigarette tax and proposed a slew of other revenue increases. Enough is enough. We are tired of this argument being painted as if increasing the gas tax or hike the toll fees are our only solutions. That is a fallacy and one we are here to clarify.

Jones defends leadership vote process

State Rep. Brad Jones on Thursday defended the process by which he was re-elected minority leader, saying challenger Lewis Evangelidis' criticisms are off base.

Jones, a North Reading Republican, was re-elected on Wednesday in a nine to seven vote. Following the vote, Evangelidis ripped Jones for "shut[ing] down debate" and refusing to conduct the election by a secret ballot.

After loss, Evangelidis rips process and Beacon Hill ‘insiders’

BOSTON -- Shortly after losing his challenge to state Rep. Brad Jones for minority leader, Rep. Lewis Evangelidis sharply criticized the GOP's caucus process and blamed Beacon Hill "insiders" for his defeat.

Evangelidis narrowly lost to Jones earlier Wednesday by a vote of nine to seven.

In a statement, Evangelidis said his efforts to defeat Jones were unfairly squashed.

Keverian to help Mass. GOP with redistricting effort

Former House Speaker George Keverian, a Democrat, has signed on to help the Massachusetts Republican Party with its 2011 redistricting efforts.

Dan Winslow, who worked as former Gov. Mitt Romney's chief legal counsel and is leading the Republican redistricting effort, told PolitickerMA.com that he met with Keverian earlier this week and Keverian agreed to help.

Jones: GOP caucus opposes any local aid cuts

State House Minority Leader Brad Jones said Wednesday that his caucus opposes any cuts to local aid.

Facing shortfalls in tax collections and a looming national economic crisis, House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi had said this week  that he expects local aid to be cut between 5 and 10 percent.

Jones, of North Reading, said Republicans opposed this year's budget because they feared local aid would have to be cut.
