Positive campaign took the day, says Lewis

In Middlesex's 31st District, Democrat Jason Lewis said Tuesday night that sticking with a positive campaign helped him win.

With 100 precincts reporting, Lewis  defeated Republican Brian O'Connor and Independent Chad Riley, 52 percent to 24 percent to 24 percent, respectively.

O’Connor, Riley, Lewis clash over the state income tax

WINCHESTER - In their debate here Wednesday night, the candidates for Middlesex County's 31st District House seat offered different opinions on whether the state income tax rate should be changed, abolished, or left alone.

The candidates were allowed to pose questions to each other in the final portion of the debate and Chad Riley, a Winchester Independent, asked Jason Lewis, a Winchester Democrat, if he would support rolling back the state income tax rate from 5.3 percent to 5 percent, as  the 2000 ballot referendum that succeeded prescribed.

Middlesex-31 candidates differ on flaggers proposal

WINCHESTER - Democrat Jason Lewis, Republican Brian O'Connor and Independent Chad Riley offered differing opinions on Gov. Deval Patrick's civilian flaggers proposal in a debate  Wednesday night.

Under the governor's plan, low-speed construction zones that meet several criteria would be tended to by civilian flaggers instead of police officers in an effort to save the commonwealth money.

Lewis said he supports the governor's proposal but certainly doesn't "want to do anything that jeopardizes the public's safety."

Riley, O’Connor, Lewis offer slightly different views on gay marriage

WINCHESTER - The candidates vying to replace state Rep. Paul Casey in Middlesex County's 31st District offered different opinions here Wednesday night on gay marriage.

Asked if homosexual couples should enjoy the same rights as heterosexual couples, Winchester Independent Chad Riley said they deserve the same rights but said he adheres to the view that marriage is between a man and a woman.
