Lawmakers to receive $3,200 raise

Gov. Deval Patrick announced late Wednesday that Bay State legislators will receive a 5.5 percent pay raise this year, the Associated Press reports.

The pay hike comes as the state and the country slide deeper into an economic recession.

The AP reports that lawmakers' base salary will jump about $3,200 per year with the raise -  from $58,237 to $61,440.

Patrick: More budget cuts on the way

Gov. Deval Patrick said Tuesday that he is considering cutting another $1 billion from the state budget, the Boston Globe reports.

Patrick's announcement on Tuesday is the second time in two months that the governor has had to announce cuts to cope with budget shortfalls.

Boston City council to hold hearing on Question 1

The Boston City Council will hold a hearing Tuesday on opposing Question 1, the ballot measure that would abolish the state income tax, according to a release from Councilor Sam Yoon.

Hayes backs Patrick on reform, hits Benson

Kurt Hayes, the Republican vying for Middlesex County's 37th District House seat, said Friday that he is ready to be a "strong ally" to Gov. Deval Patrick as he moves forward with trimming the state budget and criticized his opponent, Democrat Jen Benson, for opposing reduced state spending, a characterization that Benson strongly disputed.
