Gov. Patrick's performance in his 'town hall meetings'

[Posted on behalf of The Fernald League for the Retarded, Inc.]

Having been to two of Governor Deval Patrick's "town hall meetings" that he's currently holding across the state, I think I'm getting some insight into both some of his strengths and some of his weaknesses as a leader and a campaigner for a second term in office.

First of all, I'd say that these meetings further blur the already blurry line between governing and campaigning.  Obviously, Patrick didn't invent them.  Town hall meetings held by politicians have become a ubiquitous feature of the political landscape, from presidential campaigns on down.

They have the look and feel of both public hearings--in that ordinary citizens are invited to present their concerns and grievances to the governor--and of political campaign stops.

Patrick not completely ruling out interest in high court

A Supreme Court seat isn't just another Washington job, so Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick doesn't appear to be ruling out his interest as categorically. Governor Deval Patrick Patrick, a close friend and political soulmate of President Obama's, was mentioned for...

Anti-Patrick Facebook Sites Newly Energized

Metaphorical pitchforks and torches, it seems, are not only being handed out on Connecticut bus tours of the mansions of AIG executives. A series of Facebook sites that oppose Governor Patrick have picked up new energy in recent weeks.

The groups are dwarfed by Patrick's primary Facebook page, which has 9,625 supporters, up about 1,000, I think, from the last time I looked a few months ago. The margin between the groups -- about 97% pro-Patrick and 3% against, based on membership -- is perhaps indicative of Governor's support among the netroots.

The recent rush of activity on the "anti" sites, however, is noteworthy.

Tobin Stays Put, and Other Notes

--John Tobin tells me that he will not run for the state senate seat being vacated by Marian Walsh. He also ruled out a stab at an at-large seat. "I am running for re-election in my district," he says emphatically. So far, it looks like rep. Michael Rush has the way cleared to graduate to the upper chamber, but there are still potential candidates in the suburban parts of the district making up their minds. An intriguing rumor making the rounds is that former Allston-Brighton district councilorJerry McDermot, who now lives in Westwood, might be giving it a look.

Ezedi Running At-Large

I'm a couple of days late with this, but I think I'm still the first to report it: Egobudike "Ego" Ezedi, executive director of the Roxbury YMCA, sent an email letter out to his associates earlier this week, with this announcement:

I want to announce that I will be taking a nine-month leave of absence beginning Saturday, March 28, 2009 to begin campaigning full-time for one of four At-Large Boston City Council seats.

Ezedi's intention to run has been much-rumored for months. He ran in District 4, against Charles Yancey, six years ago, and put up a credible challenge that was ultimately defeated, as the "old guard" of the African-American community rallied around the incumbent.

MassEquality -- Breaking Up The Old Gang

California -- jealous much? -- is stealing Marc Solomon from Massachusetts, to show the Milk-reminiscing left-coasters how to get their gay-liberal-mecca mojo back.

Let's be clear: Massachusetts continues to dominate as the geographic bogeyman for conservatives, and that's thanks in some small part to MassEquality, the advocacy group that pushed to make and keep same-sex marriage a reality in the state. Sure, ME's influence on our national reputation might rank below Dukakis, Kerry, Ted K., and Barney, but after them, it's as responsible as anybody.

The gang who made it happen -- who only began forming as a staff after the 2003 Goodrich decision -- is largely gone now; like a World Series team, it has broken up piece by piece.

March 5th Education Platform Meeting

There will be a Mass. Democratic Party Platform Committee meeting on the subject of education next Thursday, March 5th.  The site is the Paraclete Foundation in South Boston (T accessible), and will begin at 7pm.  I am sure there will be much to discuss.

I would welcome any advice from those who have held previous hearings regarding mechanics, what worked, and what didn't etc.  I would also appreciate it if people would say if they're coming, so I can have a general idea of crowd size.  Comment me here, or email me at with any ideas.  Hope to see you there!
I will have printouts of Deval Patrick's "Readiness Report" as well as the platform section on education available.
