That's what I'm saying!

Yes. Ed Glaeser sings a paean to discord:

Is the governor engaging in political grandstanding? Absolutely. Is he being confrontational? Indubitably. But he is also dead right. The pension situation is a mess; reform needs to apply to current workers as well as prospective state hires. The transportation system is in crisis and the Legislature has yet to respond fully to the ethical issues raised by the Dianne Wilkerson mess. These reforms aren't naturally connected to sales taxes, but if the governor can get action on these fronts by mobilizing tea-party-like antipathy toward taxes, then so much the better.

Now ...  yesterday I mocked certain legislators' complaints of how the Gov is ruining the "partnership" with the Legislature.

Tobin Stays Put, and Other Notes

--John Tobin tells me that he will not run for the state senate seat being vacated by Marian Walsh. He also ruled out a stab at an at-large seat. "I am running for re-election in my district," he says emphatically. So far, it looks like rep. Michael Rush has the way cleared to graduate to the upper chamber, but there are still potential candidates in the suburban parts of the district making up their minds. An intriguing rumor making the rounds is that former Allston-Brighton district councilorJerry McDermot, who now lives in Westwood, might be giving it a look.

Does allowing comments improve the Globe's web site?

Blue Mass. Group without comments would be unthinkable.  What makes this site interesting (at least to me) is the animated, passionate, and sometimes startlingly well-informed discussions that the posts engender.  I've learned far more from the comments than I have from writing my own posts, and I have no doubt that that will continue.

The same cannot be said, however, for the comments sections at the Globe's site.  Almost any article about local politics -- today's example is another depressing article about "friends" of Dianne Wilkerson who gave her "personal gifts" of $10,000 -- results in a totally predictable cavalcade of angry commentary along these lines:

another cabinet member for barack obama.

Boston City Councilor Sam Yoon introduced legislation on Wednesday that would require all of the city's commissions and boards all information relative to members and meetings on the internet.

Yoon, of Dorchester, said the legislation seeks to increase citizens' access to government.

"I am a strong advocate of open and accountable government that acts within clearly established boundaries," Yoon said in a statement. "A government that can act arbitrarily and in secret invites corruption, special pleading and trading favors."
