Recipe for Good Race Discussion: What Eric Holder Left Out

As a facilitator of dialogues on race and ethnicity, I'd like to offer some comments in reaction to Ernie Boch, III's multi-topic post in which several posters expressed frustration and skepticism about trying to engage in "open discussion" or "unabashed candid discussion" with "honest opinions" on race.

Eric Holder did a great job of getting our attention - on that I think we can agree. Race is still a vast American challenge and he's right: we are cowards about discussing it. But we're afraid to talk about race for legitimate reasons. It's similar to how we are cowards about anything we think might be unpleasant because of past experience or what we've read or heard.

Your Konservatives Update

--As you can imagine, I am super-duper excited for today's RNC committee vote for chairman. Incidentally, I'm getting some chatter that incumbent Mike Duncan is now Mitt Romney's stalking-horse; meanwhile, former Huckabee campaign manager Chip Saltsman (but actually, in my analysis, a stalking horse for Bill Frist), has dropped out on account of having absolutely no support whatsoever. Ken Blackwell, who I was really rooting for because he is absolutely nuts and would be wonderfully entertaining, appears to have faded to irrelevance. Saul Anuzis doesn't seem to have much of a chance. My analysis: if this turns into a choice between Duncan and Steele, Duncan wins; if it turns into a choice between Duncan and Katon Dawson (who I originally predicted months ago would be the next chair), Dawson wins.

Newsweek's Michael Isikoff is reporting that President-elect Barack Obama is planning to tap Eric Holder to be attorney general.

Holder, who was a deputy attorney general in former President Bill Clinton's administration, has long been rumored to be on Obama's shortlist for the post, along with Gov. Deval Patrick.
