Daniel Kurtzman:
"In a move that has stunned Washington, D.C., longtime Pennsylvania Republican Senator Arlen Specter has switched parties. He is the first Republican senator to switch teams since Senator Larry Craig, I guess." --Jay Leno

"President Obama, if you take a look at it, has accomplished quite a lot in his first 100 days. By way of comparison, take a look at George W. Bush's first 100 days in office. This is in his memoir. So, according to that, Bush spent 100 days in the Oval Office looking for the corner." --David Letterman

"This really is big, because Specter's move puts the Democrats within a hair's breath of a unfilibusterable 60-seat Senate majority.

Top 25 For 2012 GOP Nod, Updated!

Mitt Romney is still the man, at least among the mostly young, mostly rabid conservatives at CPAC; he won the conference's straw poll for the next Republican Presidential nominee with 20 percent of the vote. That's three years in a row for Mitt.

As CPAC closes out to the dulcet tones of the right's dear leader, Rush Limbaugh, I have decided to update my ranking of the 25 most likely people to win the 2012 Republican Presidential nomination, made two months ago. I'll get to that below.

Just to wrap up for now about CPAC, however... The message from what I've seen is: Republicans -- and particularly George W.

I thought dissections were for biology, not political science, but the online evisceration of former G.O.P. hopeful Bobby "The Exorcist" Jindal is so amusing it's become a joke. Gawker: "Jindal just couldn't quit with the wide-eyed 'aww, shucks,' Howdy-Doody delivery, apparently rehearsed in front of a Kindergarten class." Review the painstaking comparisons between the laissez-faire governor lost in the economic theories of the 1890s and Kenneth the Page from "30 Rock." -- executed with the kind of detail that the time-wasting resources of the Internet make possible -- with a little click here.

From Daniel Kurtzman:

"The whole cast of 'Slumdog Millionaire' came out to see the Oscars.

CPAC Starts

The annual CPAC conference is underway; I've only been able to watch some of today's speeches so far. The biggest issue, from what I can tell, is the so-called "Fairness Doctrine," which as you may know is the Democrats' secret plan to rid the airwaves of all conservative and Christian broadcasting. Never mind that Barack Obama has stated that he opposes bringing back the doctrine, and the US Senate -- including Democrats -- just voted overwhelmingly for a silly amendment opposing the doctrine. Among the conservatives at CPAC, it's a major talking point and huge applause line. Also, abortion. And homosexuals.

Congressman Mike Pence -- my dark horse candidate for 2012 GOP Presidential nomination -- got a good speaking slot; he said that the US is joining Europe in "an avalanche of socialism.

Why Mass. is rich, and what we should invest in: Education

David Leonhardt, one of my favorite NYT journalists, lays it out in the cover story of this week's Sunday magazine, "The Big Fix":
Last year, two labor economists, Claudia Goldin and Lawrence Katz, published a book called "The Race Between Education and Technology." It is as much a work of history - the history of education - as it is a work of economics. Goldin and Katz set out to answer the question of how much an education really matters. ...

Goldin's and Katz's thesis is that the 20th century was the American century in large part because this country led the world in education.

Frank blasts Bush administration for how it spent bailout money

Congressman Barney Frank sharply criticized how President George W. Bush's administration has spent the first half of the $700 billion Wall Street bailout and said that Congress is currently keeping the administration from having access to the second half.

"We were very unhappy, many of us, with the way that the Bush administration spent the money," Frank, the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said Tuesday morning on MSNBC's Morning Joe.

Coming to Turner’s defense, Ramsey Clark blasts the U.S. attorney’s office

BOSTON- Former U.S Attorney General Ramsey Clark said Wednesday the prosecution of Chuck Turner is both politically and racially motivated and raised doubts about U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan's case against the Boston city councilor.

Clark, who was the attorney general under President Lyndon Johnson, said Sullivan has brought charges without sufficient evidence as the end of George W. Bush's presidency approaches.

"How is it that they've gone on for 18 months and at the end of the administration they come up with this?" he asked.
