Patrick task force recommends stricter penalties for ethics violations

Responding to numerous ethics scandals that plagued Beacon Hill last year, Gov. Deval Patrick's Task Force on Public Integrity called for stricter penalties and stronger lobbying laws in its recommendations on Tuesday.

The report is the culmination of public and private meetings of the 13-member task force. Patrick put the group together following former state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson's arrest on corruption charges.

Patrick’s ethics task force hears criticism and recommendations in public hearing

BOSTON - In its first public hearing on Wednesday, Gov. Deval Patrick's newly appointed ethics task heard varying opinions and fielded some criticism as to what the state should do in response to several recent ethics scandals.

Patrick appointed the task force shortly after state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson's (D-Boston) arrest on bribery charges. Wilkerson has since resigned, as has state Sen. James Marzilli (D-Arlington), who is facing sexual harassment charges.

Murray says ‘shadow’ over Senate is lifting

BOSTON - Moments after state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson's resignation letter was read in the Senate chamber Wednesday, state Senate President Therese Murray said the Senate is emerging from a trying time.

"The shadow is lifting, and in time, hopefully not too long from now, the good work of the Senate and our commitment to the people will once again be the focus of all inquiry and conversation," Murray, a Plymouth Democrat, said.

Resignation has nothing to do with case, says Marzilli’s lawyer

UPDATED: Jim Marzilli's lawyer said Monday that the embattled state senator's resignation on Friday was completely independent from and will have no bearing on his legal proceedings.

"His resignation has nothing to do with legal case," Terrence Kennedy, Marzilli's lawyer, told PolitickerMA.com. "One has nothing to do with the other at all."

Marzilli resigns

Jim Marzilli has resigned from the state Senate, according to Senate President Therese Murray's office.

In a letter to Murray, Marzilli, an Arlington Democrat, stated: "I hereby offer my resignation, effective at 5 P.M. on Friday, November 14."

Middlesex DA decides against charging Marzilli again
