MassEquality -- Breaking Up The Old Gang

California -- jealous much? -- is stealing Marc Solomon from Massachusetts, to show the Milk-reminiscing left-coasters how to get their gay-liberal-mecca mojo back.

Let's be clear: Massachusetts continues to dominate as the geographic bogeyman for conservatives, and that's thanks in some small part to MassEquality, the advocacy group that pushed to make and keep same-sex marriage a reality in the state. Sure, ME's influence on our national reputation might rank below Dukakis, Kerry, Ted K., and Barney, but after them, it's as responsible as anybody.

The gang who made it happen -- who only began forming as a staff after the 2003 Goodrich decision -- is largely gone now; like a World Series team, it has broken up piece by piece.

Rewriting the state party's platform

Every four years the state Democratic Party revises its platform, and this is a revision year.  And, as AmberPaw has already noted, I've been asked to serve as one of the co-chairs of the state party's Platform Committee.  It's our job to revise the current platform, after getting as much input from folks around the state as we can.

This year, the process for taking suggestions on how to improve the platform will be more open than ever before.  First, and maybe most important, this year any registered Democrat may hold a platform hearing.  Basically, all you have to do is let the party know that you're doing it.

Senate votes against independent redistricting

Remember when Blue Mass Group endorsed the idea of placing an Independent commission in charge of redistricting, with hopes the state could avoid the problems of the past?

Remember how this idea was supported by the League of Women Voters, Common Cause, the NAACP, Oiste, the Boston Globe, the Boston Herald, Govs. Dukakis and Romney, Barney Frank, and Deval Patrick?

And remember how a bill doing this exact thing was supported by 12 senators last year?

Yea, well the Senate rejected the idea on Thursday by a vote of 7-28.

From the SHNS account:

[The Republicans] noted that several of the Democrats now voting against independent redistricting - Sens.

Levy launches first TV ad, attacks Eldridge on taxes

Republican state Senate candidate Steven Levy is up with his first television ad, attacking his opponent, state Rep. Jamie Eldridge, for his stance on taxes.

Levy, of Marlborough, is competing with Eldridge, of Acton, for the Middlesex and Worcester Senate seat vacated by Pam Resor, who is also from Acton.

The ad paints Eldridge as a "Beacon Hill insider" who has supported raising taxes.

"[Eldridge] proposed to raise the sales tax by 20 percent," the narrator says. "He voted to raise taxes by $657,000,000 in 2008 alone."
