Resignation has nothing to do with case, says Marzilli’s lawyer

UPDATED: Jim Marzilli's lawyer said Monday that the embattled state senator's resignation on Friday was completely independent from and will have no bearing on his legal proceedings.

"His resignation has nothing to do with legal case," Terrence Kennedy, Marzilli's lawyer, told PolitickerMA.com. "One has nothing to do with the other at all."

Marzilli resigns

Jim Marzilli has resigned from the state Senate, according to Senate President Therese Murray's office.

In a letter to Murray, Marzilli, an Arlington Democrat, stated: "I hereby offer my resignation, effective at 5 P.M. on Friday, November 14."

Marzilli trip ‘completely outrageous,’ says Murray

State Senate President Therese Murray blasted state Sen. James Marzilli on Thursday for his October trip to Berlin, Germany, to attend an environmental forum.

Murray (D-Plymouth) said Marzilli's (D-Arlington) travels were inappropriate given the fact that he is currently facing charges of sexual harassment and is under review by the Senate Ethics Committee.

Marzilli travelled to Germany for environmental talk in Oct.

State Sen. James Marzilli, who is currently facing multiple counts of harassing women, travelled to Berlin, Germany, at the beginning of October to participate in a forum on environmental issues.

The event was hosted by the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung and the Institute for Ecological Economy Research and was entitled "Greening the Economy." It was held in Berlin on Oct. 8 and 9.

Cangiamila on the ballot in Middlesex-4

Republican Brion Cangiamila is set to make another run for Middlesex County's 4th District state Senate seat.

The Lowell Sun reports that the Billerica Republican secured enough write-in votes in last Tuesday's primary to earn a spot on the November ballot. Cangiamila also ran for the seat in the 2007 special election, losing to Jim Marzilli. Marzilli is not seeking re-election as he faces charges of assaulting several women.

With help from firefighters, Donnelly vastly outpaces Hurd in fundraising but trails in cash on hand

In the race for James Marzilli's state Senate seat, Ken Donnelly raised significantly more money than his opponent in the Democratic primary, Jack Hurd, relying significantly on his ties to firefighter unions across the country, according to campaign finance reports.
