New In The Phoenix -- Mayoral And Council Campaigning

In this week's issue of the Boston Phoenix -- in print tomorrow, online now -- I have a column with two parts, both about local Boston campaigning.

First, I note that mayoral candidates Michael Flaherty and Sam Yoon have exhibited some ambulance-chasing tendencies lately, and wonder whether Boston's tragedies might be the challengers' only opportunities to unseat the "Mayor for Life."

Then, I look at how the new 1500-signature requirement is affecting the at-large city council candidates, who have been out scrounging for John Hancocks the past three weeks -- and whether the new limit was an attempt to protect "Murphy for Life."

Check it out here:

Yoon Makes My Deadline

Two-and-a-half weeks ago, when Kevin McCrea announced his candidacy for mayor, I warned the other non-announced potential candidates to get in quick or risk my mockery. I gave them a deadline, and wrote that I would begin questioning the manhood of any who remained on the sidelines after that date.

That date: February 8th (100 days before the signature-filing deadline).

Michael Flaherty wasted little time announcing. Sam Yoon announced today, clearly for fear of my taunting.

The incumbent, however, has not announced. Apparently Tom Menino thinks he can handle my snide insults. We'll see about that.

Yoon Is Running For Mayor

At-large city councilor Sam Yoon is running for mayor of Boston, he told the Phoenix this afternoon.

Yoon spent this weekend in retreat with his wife to make the final decision, as this blog was the first to report. Having decided in the affirmative, he spoke with Mayor Tom Menino and fellow councilor and mayoral candidate Michael Flaherty to inform them of his decision.

A formal announcement will come later, "in the next few weeks," Yoon said.

"The campaign will be about the future -- looking to the future of the city, and not to the past," Yoon said. At least for the next nine months, the city's future looks pretty interesting, with both Yoon and Flaherty, as well as businessman Kevin McCrea, running for the top job; Menino has not yet declared his intentions, but is widely expected to seek re-election.

Flaherty's New Web Site

I've just received a press release from the Michael Flaherty campaign, headlined "Flaherty Launches Campaign Website."

The campaign did not have a website up when Flaherty announced this past weekend -- when the campaign accidentally put an announcement up on YouTube before they had planned to.

Now, they are proudly unveiling the new website.

Unfortunately, the press release does not mention the url of the new website.

But I'm a journalist and stuff, so I found it on my own. Turns out it's replaced his old site at www.michaelflaherty.com. Enjoy.

Morning Notes

--Deval Patrick announces his budget proposal this morning at 11:00. An hour later House Dems meet to appoint Bob DeLeo Speaker; he may not want the job after hearing what Patrick has to say.

--Michael Flaherty sez "the mayor is too secretive, and I know what that's like!"

--Oh, and by the way, this line in Laurel Sweet's article yesterday had them howling in City Hall: "Last year, Flaherty voluntarily surrendered his five-year hold on the council presidency by turning the gavel over to Maureen Feeney, the board’s only female representative."

--Jean-Claude Sanon has a spiffy new web site for his at-large city council campaign. Slogan: "United We Can." That has a familiar ring to it, no?

--All I can say after reading the Herald this morning is that I hope my in-laws appreciate the "mind-boggling," "swanky," "state-of-the-art," "lavish," "massive" TV we bought them for Christmas.
