Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Boston Progressive Talk is On the Air!

Okay, I admit it. I'm still not very good at dealing with good news. Remember the Onion video of the Obama zombies who, after devoting months of work to their candidate, enduring countless ups and downs, couldn't face the fact that he had won the election? That could have been me on the screen. Heck, it could have been you. But let's just try for a second to suspend our disbelief: After two and a half years, a group of progressive activists allied with business and political leaders has succeeded in leasing a major Boston station, WWZN (1510 AM), with a solid 50 kW signal reaching comfortably into New Hampshire, to broadcast progressive talk, starting Monday, May 4, from 6 a.

Health Care Call to Action

The Congressional Budget Office is the agency that congress uses for modeling the costs of legislation (along with a slew of other functions).  Right now, the health care reform wagon is rolling along, but the CBO isn't modeling the particular proposed legislation providing a single payer system (John Conyers' H.R.676).  There have been a lot of calls for transparency in government lately.  One way to hide from transparency is to limit which programs get cost modeled, possibly ensuring that nobody ever has to get embarrassed by the clear illustration of opportunities rejected.  If people want to vote against single payer, then fine.

Watch Me Tonight

I'll be on NECN NewsNight w/ Jim Braude tonight, bragging about my award and being all pundit-like on various topics -- beginning with Judd Gregg's withdrawal as Obama's Commerce nominee.

Which reminds me -- On January 13 I blogged:

Now that four GOP Senators have announced that they won't run for re-election
in 2010, the betting can begin on who's next. My money would be on Judd Gregg of
New Hampshire.

Now that Gregg is not getting the appointment, and said today that he will not run for re-election in 2010, I'm claiming a prognositcatory victory on this one!

Gregg Withdraws As Commerce Nominee

I'm sure someone will post some more details, but here is his statement:
I want to thank the President for nominating me to serve in his Cabinet as Secretary of Commerce. This was a great honor, and I had felt that I could bring some views and ideas that would assist him in governing during this difficult time. I especially admire his willingness to reach across the aisle.
However, it has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me.

Want to Generate Some Tax Revenue Without Raising Taxes? Let's Legalize Fireworks

Since the mid-1990s, Massachusetts has gone a long way towards shaking off its Puritanical image. Most of the Blue Laws have been repealed- one can buy beer and shop before noon on Sunday; we have marriage equality; marijuana has been decriminalized; and casino gaming is inevitable.

But one of the most obnoxious nanny-state laws that we have here in Massachusetts is still on the books. We live in only one of five states in which all consumer fireworks are illegal. According to the American Association of Pyrotechnics, some or all types of consumer fireworks allowed under federal law are legal in the vast majority of states, including neighboring New Hampshire.

Paul Hodes is in for Senate in 2010

It's on in New Hampshire.  Judd Gregg hasn't even resigned his Senate seat yet (and maybe this was coming regardless of Gregg's plans), but Paul Hodes has announced that he's running for Gregg's (soon to be Bonnie Newman's) Senate seat.  From my inbox (no link):
I announced this week that I will run for the United States Senate in 2010 to continue to keep our state and our nation moving forward.

I want to continue my service to the people of New Hampshire and continue to stand up for middle class families. I will continue to work every day for the people of New Hampshire's second district and I will work in the future to give New Hampshire the representation it deserves in the United States Senate.

Another GOP Woman Senator -- Briefly

First off, let's throw some credit to James Pindell, who to my knowledge was the first to suggest, a few days ago, that NH Gov. Lynch would select a Republican successor, thus clearing the way for Senator Judd Gregg to accept an appointment as Obama's Commerce Secretary.

Now that Gregg has been named, reports say that Lynch will nominate Lawrence's own J. Bonnie Newman, a Republican with a distinguished career primarily in higher education.

She's over 60, and my guess is that she's told Lynch she's not interested in running in 2010 and will just serve the two-year interim.

Unsurprisingly, NH Congressman Paul Hodes is
