GOP 2012 Pres. Rankings -- Updated!

It's time to reveal the new rankings of the 25 most likely 2012 Republican Presidential nominees -- updating from my rankings entering 2009, and at the end of February. And get excited, there's a new number one!

It's been an active couple of months for the Presidential wannabes, as they have shuffled to position themselves on the federal stimulus package, the federal budget, the Tax Day Tea Parties, and anything else that provides a platform for posturing.

Then there's the defection of Arlen Specter, who left because GOP primary voters wanted him gone. So... if you're sucking up to GOP primary voters, what's your response? (And if you're hoping to win the GOP Pres.

Romney's Guy At The RNC?

Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele has reportedly hired Gentry Collins to be the party's new political director. Could be a sign of Romney making inroads with Steele. Collins has been a Romney guy for several years.

Back in 2005, when Romney became chairman of the Republican Governors Association, he made a strategically savvy move in hiring Collins as RGA political director. Why so savvy? Because Collins hails from Iowa, the most important state in Romney's 2008 Presidential plan. Collins was executive director of the Iowa GOP, and ran the statewide campaign for the gubernatorial candidate there in 2002. He was one of the best possible people to have running Iowa's caucus for a GOP candidate, and Romney scooped him up early.

RNC chairman in more hot water

By Joseph Williams, Globe Staff WASHINGTON -- The brief, but rocky tenure of Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele grew shakier today when he was forced to reassure the party's conservative heavyweights by insisting he is "pro-life -- always has...

How Much Can Snowe Take?

A couple months back I suggested that Maine Senator Olympia Snowe should jump over to the Democrats. I swear the Republicans are trying their damnedest to make her do it.

Last week, RNC chair Michael Steele said on FOXNews that he would consider denying funds for, or backing primary opponents against, the three moderate Republican Senators who voted for the stimulus bill -- Snowe, fellow Mainer Susan Collins, and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania.

The three Senators were reportedly a bit peeved, as you can imagine. Roll Call reported that a furious Snowe approached Steele and demanded: "You didn't really mean that, did you?"

If Steele was conciliatory to her at the time, that quickly changed; perhaps something to do with Rush Limbaugh showing him exactly who's boss -- and how hard-line conservative you've got to be to keep the boss happy.

Limbaugh Keeps RNC's Michael Steele in his Place

The racist arm of the GOP will have none of this uppity negro thinking he's anything more than window dressing.  Here's how it all began, with Steele letting us all know yesterday that Rush Limbaugh is not the leader of the party:
HUGHLEY: You know what we do, we talk like we're talking now. You have your view. I have mine. We don't need incendiary rhetoric.
STEELE: Exactly.
HUGHLEY: Like Rush Limbaugh, who is the de facto leader of the Republican Party.
STEELE: No, he's not.
HUGHLEY: I will tell you what ...
STEELE: I'm the de facto (sic) leader of the Republican Party.
HUGHLEY: You know what? I can appreciate that.

Top 25 For 2012 GOP Nod, Updated!

Mitt Romney is still the man, at least among the mostly young, mostly rabid conservatives at CPAC; he won the conference's straw poll for the next Republican Presidential nominee with 20 percent of the vote. That's three years in a row for Mitt.

As CPAC closes out to the dulcet tones of the right's dear leader, Rush Limbaugh, I have decided to update my ranking of the 25 most likely people to win the 2012 Republican Presidential nomination, made two months ago. I'll get to that below.

Just to wrap up for now about CPAC, however... The message from what I've seen is: Republicans -- and particularly George W.

Good Speech. Now, Other Thoughts...

--Obama: "I've done more in 30 days than most Presidents do in a full term, and I'm going to do a million more things in the next few months." Jindal: "Remember how incompetent Republicans were when we were in charge?"

--I know we're all angry at fat-cat financial execs, but that's no excuse for someone stealing Mitt Romney's wife's jewelry.

--Speaking of the Mittster, quick question: if he was governor of Massachusetts today, would he refuse the federal stimulus money?

--Oh, by the way Bobby J, you were one of those Republican congressmen who you say pissed away the party's goodwill.

--RNC chair Michael Steele: civil unions is crazy-talk.

The march of idiocy

Somehow a member of my household started receiving fundraising letters from the RNC. I present you with a fundraising letter from Mr. Michael Steele, chair of the RNC.  Mendacity or idiocy? I report. You decide.
Our economy is in trouble. We all agree on that.

President Obama says that it is only the federal government that can give our economy a boost.

But even if you believe that silly premise...

Only, most economists "believe in that silly premise".
We also get made up "facts":
[O]nly 15% of the massive spending increases in the Obama/Pelosi spending spree will take place in 2009. The remaining taxpayer dollars they plan to spend pay out over the next ten years!
However, in a period that begs, simply begs for fiscal expansion, the Reagan robot Republicans still read from the same text:
I ran for the job of RNC Chairman to lead our Party forward with its core principles as a guide: shrinking the size of government and creating private sector jobs that won't go away as soon as taxpayer money runs out.

Today's Republican idiocy: Michael Steele on "jobs"

You can't make this stuff up.  New RNC chair Michael Steele went on Stephanopoulos this weekend and made a complete ass of himself.  Apparently, in his world, private sector jobs never disappear, they just hibernate for a while and then reawaken.  What a maroon.

See for yourself.  And then tell me if this guy is the one to lead the GOP out of the wilderness.
