My thoughts on the Senate's Ethics Bill

I've just returned from the Senate, where I was proud to deliver my maiden speech as State Senator on the ethics reform bill, which in my mind is the most important reform bill the Senate has taken on this session.

Next up is finalizing the amendments to the State Senate  I will be filing before tomorrow's noon deadline, so I will keep this post brief!

There has been a lot of discussion in this blog and in the news about the ethics bill before the Senate today, as well there should be on this important topic.

On the whole, I believe it to be a very good bill - the strongest of the three proposed bills (House, Senate, Governor), particularly with regards to campaign finance.

Tobin Stays Put, and Other Notes

--John Tobin tells me that he will not run for the state senate seat being vacated by Marian Walsh. He also ruled out a stab at an at-large seat. "I am running for re-election in my district," he says emphatically. So far, it looks like rep. Michael Rush has the way cleared to graduate to the upper chamber, but there are still potential candidates in the suburban parts of the district making up their minds. An intriguing rumor making the rounds is that former Allston-Brighton district councilorJerry McDermot, who now lives in Westwood, might be giving it a look.

Marian Walsh Finds A Job

State senator Marian Walsh of West Roxbury, long rumored to be up for one or another job in state government, has landed one: assistant executive director of the Massachusetts Health and Educational Facilities Authority (HEFA). OK, it's technically outside the government, but close enough. State House News Service was (I believe) the first to report it.

As I write, the HEFA board is meeting; in that meeting they are expected to approve the appointment

Last year, the Globe reported that the Patrick administration was plotting to get Walsh into HEFA as executive director, a job held by Benson T. Caswell. That was the story that embarassed political consultant Michael Goldman, whose email correspondence with Doug Rubin somehow ended up in reporter Frank Phillips's hands.

Another GOP Woman Senator -- Briefly

First off, let's throw some credit to James Pindell, who to my knowledge was the first to suggest, a few days ago, that NH Gov. Lynch would select a Republican successor, thus clearing the way for Senator Judd Gregg to accept an appointment as Obama's Commerce Secretary.

Now that Gregg has been named, reports say that Lynch will nominate Lawrence's own J. Bonnie Newman, a Republican with a distinguished career primarily in higher education.

She's over 60, and my guess is that she's told Lynch she's not interested in running in 2010 and will just serve the two-year interim.

Unsurprisingly, NH Congressman Paul Hodes is
